Laptop Review of the Alienware M11x R3

The 2011 Alienware M11x R3 ultraportable laptop computer provides a great blend of compact size, graphics and performance. Its is hard to beat as a dual purpose laptop that is good for both gaming and performing crucial everyday tasks.

Features: 4G of RAM, 500 gigabyte 7200 RPM hard drive.

Also has NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics which is an improvement over the 2010 Alienware M11X. It supports both HDMI and display ports and has 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0, dual SD/memory stick card reader, Mini-FireWire.

Pluses:

=> Battery life about 2 hours better than the 2010 model. A battery drain test revealed that the battery provides 8 hours of juice.

=> Great graphics performance

=> 5.1 surround-sound Klipsch speakers provides crisp, impressive sound that really makes games come alive.

Drawbacks:

* The weighty (4.5 pounds) and thick design of the Alienware M11x R3 is a bit disappointing especially when you consider that this is a 11 inch notebook. There are slimmer ultraportable 11 inch laptop computers on the market such as the HP DM1z and MacBook Air.

* The M11x still does not have an optical drive. This may not be a deal breaker but for installing games off a disc, having an optical drive would have been a plus.

* The Sandy Bridge Intel Core i5-2537M is a low-voltage processor that is an improvement of over last year's Core i7 ULV Alienware M11x. However, it's still not as fast as a Sandy Bridge full-voltage laptop.

* Glossy screen can cause a bit of glare and affect game play.

Bottomline

Despite the Alienware M11x R3 looking very much like last year's model, its improved battery life and performance is impressive. It is even more impressive when you consider that this performance comes at a price of around $1000, which is not much higher than the 2010 model.

At 4.5 pounds, it could be a bit lighter and less bulky, but in its class, it is still a top ultraportable gaming laptop.
