Acer Aspire 1810TZ Review

Acer Aspire 1810TZ is an ultraportable notebook based on Intel’s Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processor. Not only is the notebook thin and light, it’s also affordable. Let us have a look at its features.

Design

Acer Aspire 1810TZ This notebook has an 11.6” HD LED backlit glossy screen with a resolution of 1366x768 and an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Although the notebook comes from Acer’s Timeline Series, it doesn’t have an aluminum case but a plastic one just like the netbooks produced by Acer. However, the plastic body is still rugged and Acer has not compromised on the quality of the chassis. The Acer 1810TZ is available in black, red and blue colors. The chassis has an 11.2″ length, 8″ width, and is 0.9″-1.2″ thick. The notebook weighs around 1.4 KG.

However, practically you’ll get about 6 to 6.5 hours of battery life with typical usage, which still is pretty good for a notebook.

The right side of the notebook has a 5-in-1 card reader slot, a 3.5 mm audio jack, a 3.5 mm microphone jack, two USB 2.0 ports, a slot Kensington lock cable and a Gigabit Ethernet port. The left side of the chassis has a VGA port, the power jack, a HDMI port and a USB 2.0 port.

Acer Aspire 1810TZ has a ‘Fine-Tip’ keyboard that is almost full-size. There is no flex in the keyboard and the keys are large and well placed and are comfortable to type at normal speeds.

The touchpad blends into the palm rest area and unless you are paying attention, it can be tricky sometimes to know if you are really touching the touchpad area or not.

The touchpad is not one of the smoothest we have seen and may take some time getting used to. The multi-touch gestures for scrolling and zooming do work very well and make your life easy once you get used to them. The buttons are somewhat small but are easy to use due to their placement near the edge of the chassis.

Performance

The Acer Aspire 1810TZ is powered by Intel’s CULV dual-core processor SU4100 which is clocked at 1.3 GHz with 2 MB cache and 800 MHz FSB. The processor is optimized for power consumption, but coupled with 3 GB DDR2 667 MHZ RAM and a 320 GB 5400 rpm SATA HDD, it performs very well.

The notebook also has an onboard Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chip which can share up to 732 MB of system memory. The system is good for light gaming and the HD video playback is glitch free even while playing full HD videos. The HDMI port is a welcome addition.

The notebook comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit which runs smoothly. The applications launch without hitch and multitasking is also smooth. There is no slowdown while launching multiple applications.

On the connectivity front, the notebook comes with a Gigabit Ethernet Port, an 802.11 b/g/n standard Wi-Fi with options for UMTS or Bluetooth modules. However, we feel that the Bluetooth module should have been included by default. There is no optical drive included by default as this is an ultraportable notebook.

The sound from the speakers is clear but unfortunately the speakers are not very loud. Hence, a headphone or external speakers are highly recommended.

Conclusion

The Acer Aspire 1810TZ is a well configured, well priced ($550) ultraportable that has form factor and battery backup similar to a netbook but with performance similar to a notebook.

The notebook is a good balance of portability, price and performance. It has minor drawbacks like its touchpad and speakers, which are not necessarily, deal breakers.

If you are willing to carry an earphone and a laptop mouse while traveling, this is one of the cheapest, good quality ultraportable notebooks available on the market.
